What Is a HERS Rating?

A HERS Rating (Home Energy Rating System) is a nationally recognized measurement of a home’s energy efficiency. Developed by RESNET, the HERS Index scores a home on a scale where 100 represents the energy use of a standard reference home, and 0 represents a net-zero energy home. The lower the score, the more energy-efficient the home is.

How a HERS Rating Works

A certified HERS Rater conducts a comprehensive evaluation of the home, which includes:

Reviewing building plans
Inspecting insulation, windows, HVAC systems, and ductwork
Performing diagnostic tests like blower door and duct leakage testing
Using specialized software to calculate the home’s projected or final HERS Index
